Oasis of Hope Mathare (OOH) in a non-profit led entirely by Kenyan staff with the direct purpose of creating hope in the name of Jesus through Bible clubs for youth and providing support for their families with help with basic need and mentorship.
I met Jacob and Maureen in the spring of 2020 on a trip to Kenya. Jacob grew up in the slums of Mathare and he was bridged to education and way out of the poverty.
Jacob worked for two American ministries for many years and then branched out to form Oasis of Hope Mathare. His wife, Mareen, has held a government job while Jacob faithfully has loved and served youth in Mathare through Oasis of Hope for over five years with very little support. For the last 8 years Jacob has been going back to this largely unreached, poor slum where he grew up and loving hundreds of kids and families along the way.
Jacob and Maureen have the trust of the government, community leaders, families, and children. Between 150-200 youth come every Saturday morning to their Bible club where they are loved, hear about Christ, have snacks, play games, and allowed to be kids.
They also provide film classes, run a soccer team, do home visits, provide business training to families, and are available to those in need. They are a bridge of hope to hundreds of people living in poverty.
After significant fundraising we were able to build the Clark and Vahle Educational Drop-In Center in the Mathare slums. There is an office, kitchen, library, and large meeting room.
The youth can have snacks, read books, and grow in their faith through Bible classes and even videos of Jesus. In 2023, we provided over 7800 meals, impacted over 450 children and 142 families...we are making a difference!
Through our partnership with OOH, we want to double our impact to the people in the Mathare slums. We want to bridge your support, with their efforts to do more than anyone can even imagine.
Our goal is to double the amount of families and children served. Start a preschool, that will holistically empower families and continuing to provide spiritually mentorship to all participants.
We need your financial support to reach these goals. Get involved in one of 3 ways:
1) Monthly support of $45/month - This monthly amount provides education, food, as well as spiritual/emotional support for one child, for one year.
2) One time support that will go to purchasing a vehicle, expand the library, or go to the general fund.
Thank you for your financial support!
